A weathered metal toolbox sits on a narrow concrete ledge of a Chicago apartment fire escape, illuminated by the harsh orange glow of nearby streetlamps. The rusted surface of the lid reflects the mixed city light, highlighting deep scratches and layers of peeling gray paint that speak to years of exposure. Beside the heavy iron case, a small terracotta pot holds a resilient ivy vine that trails over the edge, its dark leaves against the cold steel railing.
