Balcony after dark in Havana

by Kyle Massey

Under the bruised purple and sodium-orange haze of a Havana night, a narrow balcony reveals a lived-in moment of domestic resilience. A rusted iron railing, pocked with age, supports a cluster of terracotta flowerpots where ivy vines spill over the edges, their leaves damp and dark against the gritty stucco wall behind. One yellow raincoat, crumpled and heavy, hangs draped over a wooden chair, its synthetic sheen reflecting the distant streetlamp’s glare. On a small, scarred table sits a tarnished nickel latch on a wooden crate, catching a sharp, cold glint of light that contrasts with the warm, diffuse spill from a nearby apartment window.
