Deep shadows dominate the stone courtyard of a temple near Marseille as the first light of early summer breaks through dramatic, heavy clouds. Long, narrow rowing boats rest in orderly lines, their wooden hulls catching sharp rim light along the gunwales. The water in the canal reflects the moody sky, creating a dark, glassy surface. Stone columns frame the background, standing in silhouette against the brightening horizon. Rowers in dark uniforms move with quiet precision, their figures elongated by the low angle of the sun. Dust motes hang still in the shafts of light falling across the wet flagstones. The edge of a boat's oar blade catches a glint of gold against the grey stone floor.
