A cylindrical jar box holding a roof core sample stands in sharp silhouette against the deepening blue of a midsummer twilight sky. Low-hanging clouds press down on the scaffolding that climbs the facade of a building near Guiyang. The metal structure creates a grid of converging lines that draw toward a distant vanishing point. Behind the dark outline of the box, the faint glow of the sky suggests the day has just ended. The surface of the jar reflects a thin rim of light, highlighting its cylindrical form against the matte black of the scaffolding. The scene rests on a narrow ledge, separated from the empty space where crews and equipment will soon arrive to begin their work.
