River Stones at Kunming Field Station Sink

Midsummer sunlight falls through overhead canopy leaves, casting dappled patches of bright white and deep shadow across a stainless steel laboratory sink. The basin rests on a weathered wooden platform, its surface scoured by wind and time. Inside the sink, smooth river stones of varying gray and tan hues lie in neat, parallel rows, waiting for identification labels. The metal rim reflects the flat glare of the noon sky, while the stones show subtle variations in texture from river erosion. A small, rectangular white label holder sits empty at the far edge, against the organic curves of the rocks. The symmetrical arrangement of stones emphasizes the disciplined nature of the scientific work taking place outdoors.
