Tangled strands of dried red chilies hang in thick clusters, their wrinkled skins catching the warm glow of nearby firelight against the cool, heavy gray of an overcast sky. The vendor’s hands, weathered and stained with paprika dust, deftly weave the stems into a long, braided ristra. Rough burlap sacks filled with other produce sit on the wooden counter beside the hanging peppers. The low sun casts long, soft shadows across the textured adobe wall of the textile trader's stall. One dried pepper rests on the rough wood grain of the table edge.
