Vendor Stringing Chili Peppers in Santa Fe

by Glenn Edwards

Wet red chili peppers glisten under a heavy canvas canopy, their skins slick with recent rain. A vendor's hands, weathered and dusted with fine red powder, thread the stems through a thick hemp cord. The peppers hang in a dense cluster, varying from deep crimson to dried orange-brown. Patches of white flour or spice dust coat the rough wooden table surface beneath the stringing work. Soft, diffused afternoon light falls through the damp gray tarp overhead, illuminating floating particles of red spice in the air. The texture of the dried pods contrasts sharply with the smooth, wet cord and the coarse weave of the hanging fabric. One loose pepper rests on the edge of the table, its stem pointing toward the vendor's thumb.
