Rinsing Chisel in Madrid
by Eileen Nava
Cool morning light spills across the tiled counter of a neighborhood bar in Madrid, illuminating a row of stacked glass tumblers waiting to be washed. A barista in a stained apron leans over a ceramic mixing jug, pouring a thin stream of water to rinse out a metal chisel left by a neighboring artisan who works in the adjacent workshop. The wet surfaces gleam under the harsh fluorescent tube overhead, against the matte pink paint on the walls. In the background, a pegboard hook holds a leather apron, while a small iron hook secures a rag near the sink. The quiet, lived-in transition between trades, where tools and drinkware share the same worn space.
