Cool blue twilight falls through a high, narrow window set into the rough concrete wall of a bunker stairwell in Austria. Warm interior lamps cast pools of yellow light that settle into the corners of the stone steps. An olive drab guide-on repair sleeve rests on a metal ledge beside the railing. The fabric texture catches the mixed glow of the dim window and the artificial bulb. Dust settles on the cracks in the concrete surface while shadows fall across the metal handrail. The hardware of the armory and barracks remains separated by this specific piece of equipment waiting along the stairwell edge. Late autumn light fades through the glass, highlighting the grain of the stone and the sheen of the metal.
