Drill Flag Tin in Predawn Bunker Stairwell

by Celeste Johns

Stark fluorescent light cuts through the predawn darkness of a concrete bunker stairwell in Tajikistan, illuminating a weathered metal repair tin resting on a cold step. The tin, marked with faded red and white insignia, sits beside the heavy steel door of an armory, while shadows from the motor-pool and barracks stretch across the rough concrete floor. Late summer heat lingers in the air, visible as a slight haze in the corners where the artificial light fails to reach. The low angle emphasizes the height of the walls and the isolation of the tin before the daily roster begins. A faint reflection of the overhead bulb glimmers on the scratched surface of the tin.
