Rain-slicked asphalt in Surabaya’s Gubeng district reflects the pale, diffuse first light, creating a mirror-like surface that doubles the chaotic energy of a passing ojek motorcycle. The rider, clad in a translucent yellow poncho, leans into a puddle, sending a spray of water that catches the ambient glow. Beside the road, a row of closed warung stalls displays wet plastic tarps and stacked metal trays, their surfaces gleaming under the overcast sky. A lone orange peel, discarded on a cracked concrete curb, offers a sharp, saturated contrast to the grey-blue tones of the wet street. The immediate aftermath of a tropical downpour, where the city’s vibrant colors are muted by water but heightened by reflection.
