The wet asphalt of a Surabaya sidewalk reflects the orange spill from a nearby warung, where a vendor in a soaked plastic poncho wipes down a stainless steel counter. Rain streaks the open window of the small eatery, lifting a faded blue curtain just enough to reveal a stack of chipped blue enamel bowls waiting for the next serving. A red plastic chair sits inverted on a table, its legs dripping onto the tiled floor, while a single dish brush rests on the edge, bristles splayed and wet. Outside, a motorbike’s headlight cuts through the dusk gloom, illuminating the glossy sheen of the wet pavement and the steam rising from a pot of bubbing soto.
