Rain blurs the neon glow of Surabaya’s Jalan Tunjungan, where a street vendor’s plastic canopy drips steadily onto a crowded stall. A customer in a soaked raincoat extends a hand toward a stack of paperbacks arranged precariously on a wet crate, their spines slick with condensation. The vendor, huddled under the awning, grips a pair of rusted kitchen tongs, using them to adjust skewers on a charcoal grill that emits faint steam into the damp air. Frayed rope fibers hang from a nearby support beam, vibrating slightly in the wind.
