Rain-Slicked Path Through Banana Plantation Field in across a harvested grain field in Queensland

Rain-Slicked Path Through Banana Plantation Field

by Samuel Sweet

Darkened earth ruts glisten with standing water along a narrow track cutting through a harvested grain field. Overcast skies diffuse the pre-dawn light, casting a uniform grey tone across the wet soil and the base of banana plants lining the path. Puddles reflect the pale sky in shallow depressions where the ground has softened from the monsoon rain. The texture of the mud is heavy and saturated, against the rough, fibrous bases of the banana stalks. In the distance, the flat expanse of the harvested field stretches toward the horizon, its stubble dark and matted under the cool, still air of early morning Queensland.
