Rain-soaked commuters under Guayaquil underpass

by Joel Walsh

Dense clusters of travelers huddle beneath the rusted corrugated metal awning of an underpass, their shoulders touching as rain sheets down from a heavy, gray monsoon sky. Steam rises from the glass of an adjacent bus shelter, blurring the interior where others wait in silence. Puddles on the asphalt reflect the warm, orange glow of streetlamps and the red taillights of distant buses, creating a shimmering, distorted mosaic on the wet ground. Dark, dramatic clouds press low against the concrete pillars of the overpass. A commuter in a yellow raincoat stands near the edge, water dripping from the brim of their hat onto a plastic bag held tight against their chest. at the edge is a single drop sliding down the grimy glass pane of the shelter, separating from the main sheet of water.
