Hard coastal glare washes over the wet asphalt outside a metro entrance in Lokoja during early afternoon. Monsoon rain leaves a sheen on the ground, reflecting the bright sky and the white body of a subway car stopped at the curb. Commuters stand in the open doorway, their figures framed by the dark glass of the subway windows. Water droplets rest on the metal frames of the vehicle and streak across the glass. Rain-soaked jackets rest against the shoulders of people waiting to cross the street. The intense light flattens the shadows on the pavement while puddles at the edge of the road mirror the red taillights of a distant bus. A plastic bag caught in the gutter lies flat against the wet concrete.
