Rain Burst Sideways on Rawalpindi Floodplain

by Tom Ahmed

Flat noon light reflects off a thin sheet of water spreading across the floodplain near Rawalpindi. A sudden burst of rain pushes sideways across the wet earth, distorting the surface into a grid of ripples. Early winter grasses, brown and brittle, stand stiff against the moisture, their tips darkened by saturation. The sky above remains a perfectly clear, pale blue, offering no clouds to break the glare. The water mirrors the horizon, creating a sharp line where the wet ground meets the dry. One ripple near the foreground edge fractures the reflection of the distant dry ridge.
