Radiosonde in Amber Sunset Light in beside a tidal survey transect in Charsadda

Radiosonde in Amber Sunset Light

by Beth Brewer

Rich amber light from the setting sun illuminates a weather balloon radiosonde held aloft by a gloved hand. Sleet falls in fine, silver streaks against the warm glow, catching the humid air that hangs heavy after rain. The instrument cluster, a mix of white plastic and metallic sensors, rests in the palm while the balloon cord trails downward. Beside the hand, a metal survey transect marks the ground, standing upright in the wet earth of Charsadda. The glove, thick and dark, contrasts with the pale device. Water droplets bead on the metal sensors, reflecting the golden hour. The sleet rests on the edges of the frame, creating a sharp boundary between the falling precipitation and the stillness of the held object. One droplet slides down the side of the sensor housing.
