Processional Float Carried Through Kenitra Shrine in in a shrine lined with lanterns in Kenitra

Processional Float Carried Through Kenitra Shrine

by Peter Roberts

Golden hour light spills through the narrow streets of Kenitra, illuminating the back of a heavy processional float being carried forward. The float is draped in dark, wet fabrics that absorb the low sun, against the warm glow hitting the stone shrine walls. Rows of paper lanterns hang from the ceiling, their surfaces glistening with moisture from the light drizzle. Long, sharp shadows stretch across the damp cobblestones, cast by the low sun and the towering figures moving the structure. Raindrops bead on the carved wood of the float's rear frame, catching the fading light. The wet stone floor reflects the lanterns in distorted, shimmering patches. one drop of water slides down a carved pillar, tracing a path through the dust on the wood.
