Pressing Masa in Oaxaca

Flat noon light bleaches the color from the cobblestone street outside a traditional Oaxacan kitchen, where a woman in a white cotton apron stands at a scarred wooden counter. Her hands, dusted with corn flour, press a mound of masa into a metal tortilla press, the action caught mid-squeeze. To her right, a stack of vintage majolica plates with cobalt blue floral patterns rests near a steaming electric kettle, their glossy glaze reflecting the harsh overhead sun. A small bowl of bright zinnias sits on the windowsill, their petals slightly wilted by the heat, adding a fragile splash of orange and red against the worn adobe walls.
