Preparing Tea in Fez

by Terri Noel

A narrow alley in the Fez medina is swallowed by thick, gray dawn mist that softens the harsh geometry of the surrounding stucco walls. The ground is slick with recent condensation, reflecting the pale, diffuse light that falls through the high openings above. A local artisan, wrapped in a heavy wool djellaba, stands before a low wooden workbench, his hands busy with a brass kettle and a glass carafe used for preparing mint tea. Steam rises in thin, translucent ribbons from the kettle, blending seamlessly with the ambient fog. Nearby, a worn doormat lies damp against the stone threshold, and a simple drawer knob on a nearby cabinet catches the faint light.
