Predawn Basket Weaver in Winter Kitchen
by Carla Trejo
Soft tungsten light spills across a wooden worktable, illuminating a basket weaver's hands as they interlace thin, pale willow strips. The room is steeped in predawn darkness, the only illumination coming from a single overhead bulb that casts a warm, yellow glow on the textured wood grain and the coiled reeds. Frost patterns rest on the window glass in the background, framing the quiet activity within the Cincinnati kitchen. The weaver wears a thick, dark sweater, their movements precise and rhythmic. Nearby surfaces reflect the soft light, creating gentle halos around the tools and the partially finished basket. A small pile of discarded offcuts rests on the floorboards, adding to the sense of active creation in the cold winter hours. at the edge is the slight sheen on the polished tabletop where the weaver's sleeve brushes against it.
