Basket Weaver in Dar es Salaam Twilight
by Leo Ware
Dim indigo light falls through a high window, casting cool blue shadows across a woven palm mat on the floor. A basket maker sits cross-legged beneath a rough shade tree structure, hands moving rhythmically as they braid dried fronds. Warm yellow light from a single interior bulb illuminates the texture of the fibers, highlighting the interlaced strands and the calloused skin of the weaver's fingers. The room is sparse, with bare concrete walls and a simple wooden stool resting nearby. Dust motes float in the shafts of window light that cut across the dusty floorboards. The contrast between the cool exterior twilight and the warm artificial glow creates a sharp division across the subject's shoulder. A finished section of the basket rests on the weaver's knee, its geometric pattern catching the dim light.
