Pollen Grain Texture on Bee Leg Near Danane Reed Bed

by Isla Andrade

Golden-brown pollen grains cluster densely along the segmented hairs of a honeybee's hind leg, each grain distinct and granular under soft, overcast light. The leg, dark and glossy, rests against a backdrop of blurred, water-slicked reed stems from a Danané wetland edge. Droplets of rain rest on the fine setae, refracting the pale morning sky. The wet season air leaves a sheen on the exoskeleton, highlighting the rough texture of the pollen load against the smooth, dark chitin. Water beads slide slowly down the leg's curve, settling into the microscopic valleys between the sticky grains. One droplet hangs precariously at the joint, ready to fall.
