Pole Vault Pit Beach Tokyo Late Afternoon
by Rita Tate
Hard coastal glare cuts across a weathered pole vault pit anchored on the sandy edge of a Tokyo beach. The landing area is covered with a heavy, gray tarp stretched taut against the wind, its surface rippling where sea spray blows across the course. Dry, pale sand surrounds the pit, scattered with faint footprints and small debris kicked up by the breeze. A metal frame holds the cover in place, rusted at the joints from salt air. The gray sky looms above, devoid of clouds but heavy with the threat of wind. Shadows stretch long and sharp across the sand, showing the low angle of the late afternoon sun. The edge of the tarp frays slightly, revealing the dark foam beneath. Grit from the beach rests on the wet fabric, marking the boundary between the sport equipment and the natural coast.
