Pin-Pricked Campaign Map in Huambo Hall
by Bonnie Brown
Sunlight streams through the high windows of the Huambo community center, casting deep, uniform shadows across the wooden floor and the surrounding walls. In the center of the room, a large paper map of the city rests on a table, covered in colorful pins marking volunteer routes. Every object in the hall—the chairs, the desks, the people standing nearby—sits in heavy, sharp darkness, yet the map itself glows with an intense, inexplicable brightness that defies the golden hour light. The pins stand out in vivid red, blue, and yellow against the white paper, their heads catching the impossible radiance. Muted reflections of the dark surroundings pool on the polished floor, but the map remains the only illuminated surface, its edges sharp against the encroaching gloom. One pin near the bottom right corner reflects the light, creating a tiny starburst on the paper.
