Observatory Dome Silhouette in Monsoon Evening Fog in on a wind-scoured research platform near Khartoum

Observatory Dome Silhouette in Monsoon Evening Fog

by Meredith Novak

Steel-blue ambient light washes the wind-scoured research platform near Khartoum as the day ends. A dark observatory dome rises in silhouette against the fading sky, its curved roof defined only by the lighter haze behind it. Drifting ground fog rests on the flat earth, swallowing the base of the structure and softening the horizon line. Condensation beads densely across the cold metal housings, catching the faint residual glow in tiny, sharp points. The landscape remains still despite the wind-sculpted terrain, leaving the dome as the sole anchor in the vast, monsoon-dampened twilight. A water droplet slides slowly down the vertical seam of a sensor housing.
