Sorting Peppers in Quito

Under the flat, shadowless noon light of a busy Quito market stall, a vendor’s hands are busy sorting bright red habanero peppers into a woven plastic crate. The scene is cluttered and lived-in, with a faded green pegboard in the background holding rusted tacks and loose nails. A dusty metal dustpan leans against a stack of cardboard boxes, catching the dull glare of the overhead sun. Nearby, a glass jar holds wooden chopsticks, and a crumpled paper receipt sticks to a stainless steel scale. The composition shows the chaotic texture of commerce, with the vibrant red of the peppers contrasting against the worn grey concrete and the muted tones of the vendor’s faded blue apron.
