Muralist at Dawn Beside Khenifra Canal
by Adam Mejia
Pale silver dawn light washes over a stone courtyard bench where a muralist sits with a fixed, quiet gaze. The winter air leaves the nearby canal banks bare, revealing dark, damp earth and scattered dry reeds. A small canvas rests on the artist's lap, displaying early strokes of ochre and deep blue against the cool gray of the morning. The perfectly clear sky above transitions from soft violet to pale gray, reflecting faintly on the still water. Dust motes hang motionless in the air, caught in the thin beam of light falling across the workbench. The subject's hands, stained with paint, hold a brush steady over the surface. A final stroke of crimson cuts across the white canvas, sharp and deliberate against the muted winter tones. The scene is anchored by the rough texture of the stone bench and the smooth, dark ripples of the canal water beside it.
