Mountain Nyala in Chilean Highland Heather Morning Shadow

Deep shadow envelops the foreground where coarse, gray-green heather blades whip violently against the wind. An Ethiopian mountain nyala stands at the edge of the light, its thick, spiraled horns catching a sharp rim of pale morning sun. The animal's coat blends with the dark, wind-swept shrubs, while the turn of seasons leaves patches of frost clinging to the low vegetation. Behind the subject, the landscape fades into a dark, indistinct mass, suggesting the early morning depth of the Chilean highlands. One strand of silver grass bends sharply near the animal's front hoof, anchoring the movement in the stillness of the frame.
