Cool early morning light spills over the corrugated iron roof of a Ponsonby garage, catching the damp sheen of asphalt where a delivery van idles with its rear doors open. Inside the cargo area, a wooden crate of bruised avocados sits beside a discarded cardboard box, while a pair of grey wool cardigans hangs from a hook on the interior wall, still smelling of cold air. A silver ladder leans against the side, its rungs reflecting the pale sky, and a terracotta bowl rests precariously on a stack of milk crates, holding a handful of loose keys and a crumpled receipt.
