Misty Stairwell in La Paz

A narrow stairwell in La Paz’s Alto neighborhood climbs steeply against damp stone walls, the air thick with the pale gray light of misty dawn. One shirt hanger hangs from a rusted nail, swaying slightly in the draft from an open window, while a pair of worn rubber slippers sits askew on the wet concrete step below. The soft, diffused light catches the texture of the rough plaster, revealing faint shadows of a peg rail that no longer holds anything. A woven mat, damp and heavy, lies partially unrolled at the landing, its frayed edges touching a puddle of condensation.
