A narrow staircase in La Paz’s Alto El Alto district climbs steeply against a stucco wall painted in faded pastel yellow. A young boy in a thick woolen poncho and knit cap pauses on the concrete steps, balancing a red plastic fruit crate filled with loose potatoes and quinoa. He looks up toward the camera, his breath visible in the overcast midday air. Beside him, a skateboard leans against the wall, its grip tape worn smooth. A woven cane screen covers a small window above, casting soft, patterned shadows on the damp concrete. The verticality of the city, with distant peaks visible in the gray haze.
