Mine Rescue Team Emerging from Tunnel at Twilight in along a service road lined with pipes near Pereira

Mine Rescue Team Emerging from Tunnel at Twilight

by Cheyenne Kirkland

Steel-blue twilight washes the service road where three figures step out of a dark tunnel mouth. Their headlamps cut sharp cones of white light through fine dust that hangs suspended in the air. Thick industrial pipes run parallel to the road, their metal surfaces dull and wet from monsoon rain. The rescuers wear heavy, mud-stained protective gear, their silhouettes tilted against the slanted horizon. Beams of light illuminate floating particles, creating visible shafts that fade into the gloom. The ground is slick with water and loose gravel, reflecting the harsh glare of the lamps. A final beam strikes a puddle, shattering the light into scattered, shimmering fragments on the wet surface.
