Midnight Sun Train in Ruined Helsinki Rink in among toppled columns and nettles near Kruununhaka, Helsinki

Midnight Sun Train in Ruined Helsinki Rink

by Rachel Cross

Flat noon light floods a desolate outdoor space where toppled stone columns lie among wild nettles near Kruununhaka. A melted and refrozen puddle on the ice rink floor reflects the pale sky. The impossible passenger train car is embedded directly into the ground, its metal siding fused with the concrete and vegetation. Drifting dust particles hang in shafts of light, catching the glow of the midnight sun. The train windows show no interior, only a dark void that contrasts with the bright green nettles pressing against the undercarriage. Rust streaks down the side of the carriage, mixing with the grey stone debris. at the edge is a sharp edge where the train wheel meets a jagged piece of broken column.
