Horse Sleigh in Early Spring Snow Near Helsinki
Soft gray light washes over a wooden sleigh resting in fresh white snow at the edge of a tall reed bed. A dark horse stands motionless, its breath invisible in the cold air, while heavy overcast skies press low against the horizon. The thaw has begun, leaving patches of brown mud and wet grass peeking through the melting snowdrifts around the sleigh runners. Reed stalks, dried and brittle, stand in stiff rows behind the vehicle, their tan and rust colors against the pale ground. The low angle emphasizes the height of the reeds and the solid bulk of the horse against the flat, gray sky. One wet patch of snow near the front runner reflects the dull light of the overcast morning.
