Midnight Commuters in Benghazi Drizzle

by Jerry McCall

Silvery winter light washes over a wet pavement outside a metro entrance in Benghazi, where commuters thread between stacked market crates and bicycle bells. The early summer air holds a fine mist that coats the concrete in a slick sheen. People move with restless energy, their figures blurred slightly by motion as they navigate the narrow gap between wooden crates and parked bicycles. Raindrops bead on the metal surfaces of the bike bells, catching the faint glow of distant street lamps. The subjects stand at the very edge of the frame, their silhouettes sharp against the darkened archway of the station entrance. One puddle near the curb reflects the flickering overhead bulb, distorting the image of a passing pedestrian into fragmented shards of light.
