Melted Wax Pools on Granite Steps at Gujranwala Polling Station

by Carole Bartlett

Hard coastal glare flattens the texture of grey granite steps where a thick pool of translucent candle wax has melted and spread. The wax glows amber against the pale stone, its surface rippled by heat and time. In the immediate foreground, black broadcast cables and crumpled paper notices drape across the frame, partially obscuring the view of the steps. The notices bear faint Urdu script, their edges frayed by the dry season wind. Behind the wax, the dark entrance of a civic building stands under the harsh noon sun. Shadows are sharp and short, cutting across the wet-looking wax. A small crack in the granite runs parallel to the melting pool, highlighting the rough, weathered surface of the public stairway.
