Winter noon light cuts sharply through the canopy of a plane tree, casting dappled leaf shadows on the rough, salt-weathered plaster of a Marseille balcony wall. A woman in a heavy wool coat pauses, her hand resting on a rusted iron gate handle, her breath visible in the cold air. Below, a striped towel hangs limp from a drying rack, its bright red stripes against the muted grey stone of the Le Panier district.
