Flat Noon Light on Cleaver in Marseille

Under the harsh, shadowless glare of a Marseille noon, a street vendor’s hand grips a worn leather handle attached to a heavy brass cleaver resting on a scarred wooden chopping block. The blade reflects the blinding white sky, contrasting sharply with the dark, fibrous grain of the local olive wood that has absorbed years of salt air and use. Behind the block, a stack of woven reed baskets sits next to a stainless steel electric kettle, evidence of a lunch break in progress near the Vieux-Port. One smear of olive oil marks the edge of the cleaver's spine, catching the flat light in a thin, greasy line.
