Postcards at Noon Light in Marseille

by Noah Benjamin

A narrow stairwell in Marseille’s Old Port is flooded with harsh, clear winter sunlight that turns the air visible. On a worn wooden landing, a cluster of copper pots hangs from a brass pulley system, their surfaces reflecting the bright sky and the deep blue of a nearby canal. Beside them, a stack of postcards leans against the peeling lime plaster wall, their glossy surfaces catching the glare. One taper candle sits in a rusted holder on the step below, unmelted and still. The industrial weight of the metal against the fragile paper and wax, creating a sharp, colorful composition where light defines the texture of the aged stone and the polished brass.
