Lichen on Bronze Plaque Near Frankfurt at Dawn
by Steve Guzman
Soft overcast light washes a weathered bronze plaque resting on a stone surface near Frankfurt. Crusts of pale green and grey lichen encrust the metal, filling the crevices of faded lettering. A subtle heat haze shimmers above the ground, distorting the lower edge of the plaque slightly. The dry season leaves the surrounding earth cracked and pale, against the cool, oxidized tones of the metal. Dust settles in the deep grooves of the inscription, while the lichen spreads in irregular, organic patches across the flat surface. The wide panoramic view shows the texture of the stone base beneath the plaque, at the base of the object in a landscape that feels still and silent under the morning sky. A fine crack runs along the bottom rim of the bronze, catching a faint highlight.
