Laundry Stall in Luxor
by Noah McBride
A narrow alleyway in Luxor’s West Bank, lit by the harsh, flat light of a winter noon, reveals a laundry stall where white cotton towels hang heavy on a rusted wire line. Below, a worker in a dusty beige shirt uses a wooden broom to sweep grit from the cracked concrete floor, the bristles kicking up fine dust that hangs suspended in the sunbeams. To the side, a clay pot sits inverted near a stack of folded linens, its rough, earthen texture against the smooth, sun-bleached fabric. The background shows the weathered stucco of a nearby home, marked by years of sun and sand, while a single pair of rubber boots rests against the wall, unused but present.
