Laughing Boy with Frozen Water Splash Portrait

Harsh fluorescent light bleaches the skin of a young boy whose cheeks are streaked with dark, wet mud. He laughs with an open mouth, his teeth catching the cold white glow. Suspended in the air before his face, a chaotic splash of water hangs perfectly frozen, every individual droplet sharp and distinct against the darkness. The droplets refract the artificial light, creating tiny, sharp prisms that hover motionless. Behind the boy, the background dissolves into deep shadow, suggesting the humid night air of a midsummer evening near Tucson. The mud on his skin looks heavy and granular, against the glass-like clarity of the suspended water. One droplet at the very bottom of the splash reflects the boy's own eye.
