Late Afternoon Stained Light in Romanesque Abbey

by Natasha Solis

Rounded arches define the thick stone walls of the chapel, creating a rhythmic series of openings that recede into the distance. Late afternoon light falls through colored glass windows, casting patches of deep amber, ruby, and sapphire across the rough-hewn floor. The turn of seasons is visible in the way the low sun angles sharply, illuminating dust motes dancing in the beams. Lamplight settles softly into the corners, adding a warm, yellow glow that competes with the cool tones of the stone. Leading lines formed by the arches and floor tiles draw the eye straight toward the altar. A final beam of red glass rests on the base of a central pillar.
