Kathakali Dancer Amidst Snow and Sun
Vivid green and red face paint defines the profile of a Kathakali performer standing rigid beside a dark canal in Guayaquil. The dancer wears heavy, layered silk costumes with metallic ornaments that catch the spill of distant street lamps. A sharp vertical line divides the frame: the left half is blanketed in falling snowflakes that settle on the dancer's shoulder and the wet pavement, while the right half basks in bright, harsh sunshine that illuminates skittering dry leaves. The cool season air is visible as the contrast between the frozen left and the sun-drenched right. Reflections of the street lamps shimmer on the canal water, mirroring the impossible split sky above. One snowflake rests on the tip of the dancer's painted nose.
