Kabul Drummers Window Shows Indoor Scene
Crisp midday light floods the high-altitude air of a Kabul prayer hall, striking damp patches on the stone floor where recent rain left a sheen. Musicians sit in a loose circle on woven rugs, their hands resting on wooden drums painted in restrained earth tones. A tall rectangular window frame stands against the far wall, yet the glass reveals the interior of the same room rather than the outside world. The view through the pane shows the backs of the seated musicians and hanging lanterns, creating a recursive loop of the space. Dust motes drift in the sharp beams, settling on the polished wood of the drum shells and frayed edges of the rugs. Light hits the back of a musician's head, casting a soft shadow that merges with the shadow of the window frame on the floor.
