Ice Climbers Ascend Blue Waterfall in Yellowknife Evening

by Arlo Barron

Honeyed evening light bathes a frozen waterfall, turning the ice into a pillar of glowing blue against the village lane. From a worm's-eye view near the ground, four climbers in colorful gear ascend the steep vertical face, their ice axes driven deep into the translucent surface. Early spring thaw has softened the surrounding snow, creating slushy patches at the base where the water once flowed. Visible breath rises in white clouds from the climbers' masks, hanging in the cold air against the warm sky. The ice surface shows deep ridges and cracks, catching the rich amber light that illuminates every texture. A final reflection of the climbers' boots glints on a wet stone near the bottom edge.
