Hibiscus in Salvador Wet Season Light

by Ruben Moody

Vibrant red petals of a hibiscus bloom dominate the foreground, their surfaces glossy under the hard coastal glare of late afternoon. The central stamen curls outward in a sharp, dark arc, against the soft, blurred background of terraced garden plots. A thin layer of light fog drifts between the green terraces, softening the distant foliage while the flower remains crisp. The wet season air settles on the leaves, visible as a slight sheen on the broad green leaves surrounding the bloom. Terraced stone walls rise gently behind, covered in dense vegetation. The light strikes the upper edge of a petal, creating a bright, translucent highlight against the deep red. at the edge is the curl of the stamen tip, poised just above the shadowed recess of the flower's throat.
