Hanukkah Menorah in Sapporo Synagogue Window
by Max Guthrie
Cool blue twilight light fills the interior of a timber synagogue hall in Sapporo, casting a soft glow across polished wooden floors. A brass menorah sits in the window frame, nine candles burning with steady orange flames that contrast sharply against the deepening evening sky. The warm firelight reflects in muted streaks along the dark floorboards, stretching toward the foreground where the wood grain is clearly visible. Heavy timber beams run horizontally across the upper ceiling, framing the window in a rustic structure. Outside, the late summer sky holds a pale violet hue, while inside the room remains quiet and still. The brass surface of the menorah shows subtle scratches and patina, catching the fire's glow at the base of each stem. One shadow from the central candle falls directly against the white plaster wall behind the fixture.
